...and
the same goes with owner Stephanie White and her unprofessional
handling of her employees during the sale of Gas America to
Speedway LLC
From Indianapolis Business Journal, Feb. 11 2012 Greenfield-based Gas America Services
Inc. said Saturday that it will be acquired by Speedway
LLC of Enon, Ohio. Financial terms were not disclosed. The vast majority of the 88
convenience stores operated by Gas America will be
converted to Speedway convenience stores, Speedway said.
Gas America has locations throughout Indiana and in
parts of Ohio. Several undeveloped parcels of land are
included in the deal. Gas America, founded in 1916, is in
its fourth generation of family ownership. The company "has been a
successful convenience store chain serving customers and
communities throughout Indiana and Ohio for almost a
century," Gas America CEO Stephanie White said in a
prepared statement. "It is a testament to the
entire team and the quality of our operation that
Speedway was interested in acquiring our chain." Speedway President Tony Kenney added:
"These stores will be an outstanding addition to
the Speedway brand. They are very well-managed stores
that will compliment our existing network, allowing us
to better serve customers in our Indiana and Ohio
markets." Speedway, which has 1,375 locations in
seven Midwestern states, is owned by Marathon Petroleum
Corp. of Findlay, Ohio.
In e-mails sent to store managers during the
"rumor" period (Jan. 10, 2012 - Feb, 11. 2012) of the
impending sale of Gas America, Stephanie White and Gas America's
top management stated several times that the choice of buyers
hinged on the buyer's treatment of over 1,000 Gas America
employees because the "employees are like family." Bull shit... Money is all that mattered in the end. What will happen to over 40 employees at Gas
America's corporate headquarters? Unemployment - no room at the
Speedway Inn. What will happen to over 1,000 store managers
and Sales Associates (SAs)? Who knows... neither Stephanie White
nor Gas America is addressing squat. Speedway LLC isn't saying,
they are just handing out "Career Opportunity Packets"
to the employees that includes an extremely personally invasive
background check and employment application. Gas America's Sales Associates must go through a
rehire process, which, of course, isn't uncommon in faceless
corporate takeovers. But what happens with Gas America SAs with
several years of devotion to Gas America? Will they retain their
seniority? Who knows... neither Stephanie
White, Gas America nor Speedway LLC will
take the time to answer such an easy question, which
leads this current SA to believe "NO f'in way!" If a Gas America SA will be eligible for 2 or 3
or more weeks of vacation right after the sale is finalized in
May, will they keep that hard earned and well deserved vacation
time? Who knows... neither Stephanie White, Gas America, nor
Speedway LLC is saying, which leads this current SA to believe
"NO f'in way!" Will current Gas America SAs lose any hourly
wages? Will current Gas America SAs lose any weekly hours? Who
knows... neither Stephanie White, Gas America, nor Speedway LLC is
saying, which leads this current SA to believe
"Probably..." Now, this current SA will admit their may be a
chance of better benefits. Under the current Gas America's benefit
plan no SA can afford medical insurance - only store managers,
corporate office employees, maintenance personnel, and upper
management can afford medical insurance - SAs working "full
time" 37 hours per week with a family would receive a $30 to
$40 bill each week instead of a paycheck. Single SAs would receive
a paycheck, but then couldn't afford gas to get to work. Low paid
SAs pay extremely high premiums while higher paid employees pay
far less in premiums... family... yes, Stephanie White and Gas
America cares about its "family." So SAs may be better
off under Speedway LLC's benefit plan, but who knows... neither
Stephanie White, Gas America, nor Speedway LLC is saying. Speedway LLC wants employment applications from
current Gas America employees - well, current Gas America
employees want some answer before deciding if they want to work
for Speedway LLC, or even continue to work for Gas America. No answers, no applications. And this current SA says, "Shut'em down!
Refuse to make Stephanie White and Gas America another dime until
their "family's" concerns are addressed!!!"
